Plastic Bottle Materials – Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC)

Plastic resin Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), SPI code 3, is a polymer of vinyl chloride.  It is a common choice for plastic bottles for several reasons.  PVC is naturally clear, reasonably strong, and has very low oxygen transmission.  In fact, PVC is an excellent barrier to most gases.  While PVC is resistant to chemicals, it cannot hold up to solvents.  However, because PVC is both resistant to oils and has very low oxygen transmission, it is an excellent choice for packaging salad oils, mineral oil and vinegars.  PVC is also a common choice for packaging personal care products such as shampoos and cosmetics, for the same reason.  PVC plastic exhibits low temperature resistance and, as a result, cannot be used with hot filled products.  PVC’s semi-rigid nature allows it to accommodate handled designs for plastic bottles.
